Moving to New York from London?

I'm 19 years old and am doing a BA in Film & television and have started planning what I'm going to do after I leave uni. I've heard that London and New York are both really good for aspiring filmmakers, but since i already live in london I would really like to move to New york at some point for about a year just to get a different take on filmmaking and see if it's any better for me so I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how I would do that?! I've heard that it's hard to do that unless you have some particularly useful skill and you can only move there for 3 months on a visa or something. Does anyone with experience in this have any useful advice to give me? cheers :)
