Copyright laws for a documentary filmmaker?

Me and a friend of mine are in the middle of building an educational documentary that we plan to sell. There are some clips from Universal movies that we'd like to include in the film. What are the copyright laws in the US for using clips from movies? For example: is there an x number of seconds/minutes we can use without permission, or do we have to include some kind of credit at the end of the film, or what?
