Filmmaker's Battle With Wind?

I'm a beginning filmmaker, and I'm making a 15 minute short film. My problem? Every damn shot had obnoxious wind in the back ground, over the audio. I could go in and edit the wind out, but I was wondering how filmmakers avoided the wind to begin with? Any tips and suggests will be well appreciated, thank you.
